THE REGIONAL CHAIRS

WEST GENERAL CHAIR: ANDY MILLER 0f WAVY in Portsmouth, VA

I have been a photographer since 2005.  My first station was WBOC out of Salisbury, MD.  Whileworking at WBOC I began reaching out to people across the country for guidance.  One of the first people to offer advise and feedback was a huge name in the NPPA and he convinced me to attend my first work shop.  The 2006 Northern Short Course was a life changing experience.  It opened my eyes to what is possible when you tell a story.  Shortly after attending that workshop I moved to Baltimore, MD to work at WBFF and in 2007 moved to Portsmouth, VA where I am today at WAVY.  The NPPA has been a tool that has helped me improve my craft.  Without NPPA members helping me develop along the way and the contest as a measuring stick I would never have made it where am or where I am going.  I hope that over time I can give back all that I have received and more.  Please feel free to contact me if you ever feel the the need.

SOLO VIDEO CHAIR: Joe Fryer of KING in Seattle, WA
Central Top Station ChairKash Cashell of KLAS-TV in Las Vegas
Kash discovered his passion for photography at the University of Montana where he graduated in 2002 with a B.A. in Journalism emphasizing in Radio/Television Production. Starting immediately after his college graduation, Kash has worked his way up television markets from part-time photographer in Billings, MT to his currently position as a photojournalist for KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada. He enjoys how being a photojournalist sparks his creativeness in not only television but all other aspects of his life. Once a shy person, Kash now enjoys meeting new people and telling their stories for the news. Kash has wanted to be a member of the NPPA since his college days. He was finally able to join the organization once he moved to Las Vegas in 2006 and when he was asked to be a NPPA Chair a few years later, he jumped at the opportunity. He doesn’t mind the late nights and the seemly endless work that comes with the position because he believes being in the NPPA helps make its members better photographers. Someday Kash hopes to win the NPPA POY award, until then he is determined to continue to work hard as Chair helping to improve the Quarterly Clip Contest.

Central General Chair: John Kirtley of WLOS in Asheville, NC

East Top Station Chair: John Doung of WTHR in Indianapolis, IN

I have only been in the business for six years, but it feels a lot longer (in a good way). I graduated from Ball State University and my first TV job was at WNDU-TV in South Bend (also my hometown). I worked there for five years, but in the summer of 2009, I decided to leave the news business. I was not burned out or tired. I wanted to leave my hometown and explore the world, so to speak. So I moved to Chicago, enrolled in grad school at Loyola University and pursued a masters in Social Work to become a marriage/relationship counselor. It was a fantastic experience, except for the part where I was unemployed and was running out of cash. Unfortunately after a semester, I dropped out and started to look for jobs in TV. I was hoping to find work in Chicago (wishful thinking), but instead, I stumbled upon an opening at WTHR (Indianapolis). A week and a half after I dropped off my resume, I got offered the job. It felt like destiny and a “meant-to-be” situation so I took it and here I am, living the dream in Indy! For me, I volunteered to be a contest chair because I am a huge supporter of the NPPA and the quarterly contest and I know how beneficial the contest can be. Yes, I realize we’re not in the business to win awards but I feel the competition motivates us to work harder and tell better stories. It is a lot of work, but strangely, I really enjoy the whole process of gathering and managing the massive amounts of entries every three months.

East General Chair: Corky Scholl of KUSA in Denver,CO

CERTIFICATE CHAIR: Carolyn Hall Jensen of KTUU in Alaska
Before getting into news, I was a producer and editor for the Boston Red Sox for four and a half years, where I produced in-game music videos and in-depth stories for two weekly Red Sox TV shows. My favorite moments while there were during the 2003 and 2005 playoffs and the 2004 World Series victory. Also while in Massachusetts, I freelanced for the CNN-Boston bureau, and worked in the control room of the Boston Garden for the Bruins and Celtics games. With the help of the NPPA and it’s many conferences I attended, I achieved my goal of joining a newsroom. In 2008 I moved to Alaska to join KTUU and it’s award-winning staff of photojournalists. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of several NPPA stations of the year – KTUU in 2008 and 2010 and KING in 2011. I volunteer for the NPPA because it has given me much over the past six years. I’m glad to repay the organization in this small way for all of the time and effort that its members have given me, as I would not be the photographer I am today if it weren’t for this organization. I truly enjoy being involved where there is a focus on learning and improving the craft of storytelling. If you need a certificate contact me!
